This book of poems features fourteen animals, each assigned to a specific color. As you turn the pages the bold illustrations make the text come alive and totally engages the reader/listener. From the poem called Yellow Elephant, you see a large yellow elephant walking with her trunk up in the air. Opposite the text reads :                      

                                                  “Yellow elephant                       

                                                    in the jungle sun                      

                                               in the day’s yellow heat,                       

                                                 trumpeting her song                        

                                                 and galumphing along... .” 


                    As I read this book, I found a surprise waiting on each page.

     meaning of trumpeting and galumphing. 

4. Blue Turtle    Show the illustration. Why do you think the author used blue for 

    this page? Listen to the poem and find out. 

    Blue is often associated with cool. It is cooler in the shade. 

5. Gray Goose    Show the illustration. How is the gray goose feeling? Listen to 

    the poem and find out. 

    She is in a tizzy because she cannot find her gosling.

This tale of friendship and loyalty would be especially enjoyed by mature second graders and up. If I were a school superintendent, this book would be required reading or listening. It is hard to find a better read aloud. It is a classic in every sense of the word.

They all become friends because of Winn-Dixie. This tale of kindness, friendship, and understanding is a real gem.

It will soon be Grandparents Day at Zuma’s school. She is worried that if she brings her grandma, the other children will laugh at her or will be afraid of her. Nana Akua has tribal markings on her face which are permanent. Nana resolves this dilemma by bringing a quilt and some paint to class. She tells the class the meanings of the markings on the quilt. The students then selected a mark that best suited them and Nana painted their faces. At the end, everyone had marks on their faces and were proud of them.

This is a story about a ten-year-old boy and how he handles peer pressure and pressure from his father. When he was eight years old he dreaded his tenth birthday, because that was when the boys in his town became wringers. Every year a pigeon shooting contest was held and the wringers strangled the wounded pigeons. Most boys cannot wait until they are ten to get this opportunity. However, Palmer is different from most boys. He does not understand why pigeons have to die. He is afraid to tell anyone about his concerns, because he knows that the other boys will make fun of him. He thinks he will also lose the respect of his father who won a trophy as a wringer when he was a boy. Palmer's problems worsen when a stray pigeon pecks at his bedroom window. In a town where everyone hates pigeons, he decides to keep one as a pet. Terrible things will happen to him if anyone discovers his secret. Should he become a wringer and please his father or obey his conscience?

As you read this book, you cannot wait to see what is on the next page as the author/illustrator uses his talents to develop an appreciation of nature in a most whimsical manner. As a final treat - the artwork is fantastic!

 Who is Earth Mother? She is a young lady, presumably Mother Nature, who roams the earth creating breezes and storms, listening to animals, and making the world pretty. She listens to man complain about the mosquitoes, and mosquitoes complain about frogs, and frogs complain about man. The food chain is clearly illustrated in this beautifully illustrated read-aloud.

THEME - A TALE OF COMPROMISE

When two groups of people have their differences, a compromise may be the solution. This story, based on true events, takes place in Chinatown. Henry Chu and his friends fly kites from his roof. Tony Guglione, from neighboring Little Italy, and his friends, throw rocks at the kites. A confrontation develops and Henry learns that his kites are scaring Tony’s pigeons. They decide to fly the kites in the morning, while the pigeons are in their coops.

1. When Tony saw that the kites were scaring his pigeons, he began to  throw 

    rocks at the kite. Could he have done something else that would

    children how to make kites. He kept making the kites after the boys 


    destroyed them. Making each kite required a lot of work and patience.
