Jane Addams Children’s Book Award

The Jane Addams Children’s Book Award annually recognizes children’s books of literary and aesthetic excellence that effectively engage children in thinking about peace, social justice, global community, and equity for all people. A national committee of members with passion for and expertise in children’s literature and social justice is responsible for making the choices each year.

ASIAN/PACIFIC AMERICAN AWARD FOR LITERATURE -

 is awarded by the Asian/American Library Assn. and focuses on works about Asian/Pacific Americans and their heritage.

Booklist
 

Booklist is a publication of the American Library Association that provides critical reviews of books and audiovisual materials for all ages. Booklist's primary audience consists of libraries, educators, and booksellers.



Boston Globe-Hornbook Award
 

The Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards are a set of American literary awards conferred by The Boston Globe and The Horn Book Magazine annually from 1967. One book is recognized in each of three categories: Fiction and Poetry, Nonfiction, and Picture Book.



Carnegie Medal
 The 

Carnegie Medal is a British literary award that annually recognizes one outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults.


Carter G. Woodson Book Award 

The Carter G. Woodson Book Award is presented to exemplary books written for children and young people each year at the National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference.

The Charlotte Zolotow Award is an American literary award presented annually for outstanding writing in a picture book published in the United States during the preceding year.

Coretta Scott King Award

The Award is given to an African American author and illustrator for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions. The Coretta Scott King Book Award titles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.The Award is further designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.


Christopher Award

This award is presented to authors who "affirm the highest values of the human spirit." It is given by the Christophers, a Christian organization founded in 1945 by the Maryknoll priest James Keller

The Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award

JOSETTE FRANK AWARD 

This award for fiction honors a book or books of outstanding literary merit in which children or young people deal in a positive and realistic way with difficulties in their world and grow emotionally and morally. The award has been given annually since 1943.

Malka Penn Award

Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children's Literature

This award is given annually to the author of an outstanding children's book addressing human rights issues or themes such as discrimination, equality, poverty, justice, war, peace, slavery, or freedom.

Honoring books that help adolescents become aware of themselves and address questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and the world

The Michael L. Printz Award 

is an American Library Association literary award that annually recognizes the "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit". 

Middle East Book Award

MEOC the Middle East Book Awards recognize exemplary books for children and young adults that con-tribute meaningfully to an understanding of the Middle East and its component societies and cultures. Books are judged on the authenticity of the portrayal of a Middle Eastern subject, as well as on their characterization, plot, and appeal for the intended audience.  

Moonbeam Children’s Book Award
 

The Moonbeam Children's Book Awards are designed to bring increased recognition to exemplary children's books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and life-long reading.


National Jewish Book Award

NOTABLE BOOKS FOR A GLOBAL SOCIETY AWARD

This is an annual list of 25 books created by the International Literacy Association which enhance student understanding of people and cultures. 

Orbis Pictus Award
 

The Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children recognizes books which demonstrate excellence in the "writing of nonfiction for children." It is awarded annually by the National Council of Teachers of English to one American book published the previous year.

Peace Corps Writers Award

This award is given annually to authors who write about countries that benefit from Peace Corps volunteers.

Phoenix Award
 

The Phoenix Award annually recognizes one English-language children's book published twenty years earlier that did not then win a major literary award. It is named for the mythical bird phoenix that is reborn from its own ashes, signifying the book's rise from relative obscurity.


Pura Belpre Award

This award is named after Pura Belpre, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The award is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

VOYA Founded in 1978, Voice of Youth Advocates, or (VOYA),This magazine is the leading library journal dedicated to the needs of young adult librarians, the advocacy of young adults, and the promotion of young adult literature and reading. Its most prestigious award is a Perfect Ten. This is given to a book that gets a five star rating for quality and a five star rating for popularity.

She continually struggles to find her identity as emotional turmoil is part of her everyday life. THEMES - GRIEF, LOSS OF A CHILD, THE HORROR OF SLAVERY

The author takes the reader back to Africa during the early days of the slave trade. We meet Dinga, the village blacksmith. He recently lost his wife during childbirth, but his son survived. He eventually becomes an apprentice to his father. One day he does not return home and his father learns that he was captured and sold as a slave. Dinga, becomes heart-broken and is unable to work. For the next three years he does nothing but think about his son. He calls on fire, water, and wind to help him find the boy. At last, wind using the force of a hurricane takes Dinga to Charleston as a spirit. He sees his son who is now a successful blacksmith. Dinga returns to Africa overjoyed. This is a powerful story that needs to be read and discussed. No guilt here - only anger.
