Award winning author, Jerry Spinelli has done it again as he introduces Stargirl to young adolescents. Stargirl arrives as a new tenth grader at Mica High School. By the end of the first day, everyone is talking about her. By December, she is the most popular girl in the school. By March, she becomes the most hated person in the school. Stargirl takes this roller coaster ride because she is different. She acts and dresses differently from everyone else. She had been home schooled since kindergarten and her upbringing has given her a sense of overwhelming confidence. While she is interested in helping others, she doesn’t care what they think about her. Then she meets Leo and falls in love with him. He loves her too, but he has to pay the price when the student body shuns her. Leo must decide to be part of the crowd and avoid Stargirl, or stay with Stargirl and become a social outcast too. Peer pressure, honesty, morality, acceptance, and decision-making, are all intertwined in this wonderful novel that grabs your emotions and never lets go.

YOUNG ADULT LIBRARY SERVICES ASSOCIATION (YALSA) - BEST BOOK FOR YOUNG ADULTS
The question is not only what happened to Lani, but also, who is Lani? When Lani arrives on Hackett Island, Claire and her cheerleader friends do not know if she is a male or a female. Meanwhile, Claire has also been hiding her identity. She doesn’t reveal her bouts with leukemia or her alcoholic mother until Lani pries these secrets out of her. Lani becomes the one person Claire can talk to about her deepest, darkest fears. The “in crowd” on the island becomes intolerant of Lani when he and Claire become close. Since Lani is somewhat effeminate, Claire’s former friends decide that he is gay. Whatever, he is, he is someone special to Claire who thinks he may be a floating angel. Prejudice, homophobia, friendship, tolerance, and individuality are all woven into a powerful story, which should appeal to most teens. While this novel is one of the best I have ever read, the author does readers a disservice by revealing the end in the prologue. I suggest that this part should be omitted as it does nothing to enhance the story, but does remove some of the suspense that makes the last fifty pages totally riveting.
1.What lesson did you learn from this story?
Value individuality not blind conformity
2. Is Lani a boy or a girl? Explain.
3. Would you accept Lani as a friend? Why?

While this book is the young adult version of Stamped (For Kids), any adult should find it very informative and thought provoking. For example, I never considered Planet of the Apes and Rocky to be racist films. The authors make their case.
Stamped - Racism, Antiracism and You covers most of the material in the first book, but goes into much greater detail. I highly recommend this book for mature middle graders and up. For those people who want to block Black history from our schools, this book illustrates what students, Black and White, would be missing.
UPDATE: As of today, May 9, 2023, this book has been banned from South Carolina schools.

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL - BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR
This is one beautiful novel. The awards listed above are totally justified, as this book is a must read for all teen girls regardless of color. Black kids will relate to discriminatory behavior and whites will gain a better understanding of these problems.
Jade, an overweight black girl, is trying to fit in as she enters a prestigious high school whose school color is white. Unlike most of the students, she is bussed from the poor side of town, so she has to deal with issues of race and privilege. Her life is filled with hard choices as she tries to figure out what she wants and how to achieve her goals.
When a white girl becomes her best friend, they do everything together. However, they have a rocky relationship due to racial misunderstandings.
She joins a mentor group called Woman to Woman where she and her mentor learn from each other. This organization expands Jade’s world as she becomes more confident and vocal about her ability to express herself verbally and through her art. I just could not put this book down as each page lured me on to the next one. Put this one on top of your list!
1. What do you admire most about Jade?
2. What does Jade have in common with York?
They are both explorers. Jade is exploring her talents and how she will fit
into this world. York is exploring the wilderness and discovering what it
is like to be free.

This novel centers around eleven-year-old Hattie Owens who lives in a small town where her parents own a boarding house. Little did Hattie know that her routine life was about to change dramatically when the previously unknown Uncle Adam comes to live with her. For years Adam had been living at a school that housed people with mental disorders. Now that the school was about to close, Hattie meets her “new” uncle. The two become good friends as they enrich each other’s lives. The author uses this setting to encourage readers to accept people for who they are and to understand how people with mental illness live. More books like this need to be written as knowledge brings understanding.
