BOOKLIST - STARRED REVIEW
Here is a color and counting book that offers a lesson on how to deal with a bully, who is portrayed by Red. When Red meets Blue, he says “Red is HOT. Blue is NOT.” Red also intimidates the other colors who are too afraid to say anything. Then One comes along and he says, “If someone is mean and picks on me, I, for One, stand up and say, No." His bravery encourages the other colors to change into numbers and stand up to Red. This causes Red to become smaller. At the end, Blue offers him an opportunity to be counted and to join the group as an equal. Strength in numbers is the theme represented here and it works very well. I like the way the author allowed Red the opportunity to be part of the group.
1. What lesson did you learn from the story?
2. Why was Red called a hot color?
3. In the story, Red was called a hot head. What does that mean?
4. At first, the other colors did not tell Red to stop picking on Blue. Why?
5. At the end of the story, the numbers all shouted, “Everyone Counts!" What
does that mean?
6. If you could be a color, which one would you be? Explain.

BOSTON GLOBE HORN BOOK - HONOR👍🏿
COOPERATIVE CHILDREN'S BOOK CENTER (CCBC) - CHOICES
This book is divided into 8 two-page chapters, which coincide with each of the eight wars fought by Americans. The author describes what her female ancestors did during each of these time periods. Ironically, they were all involved in human and/or artistic pursuits. For example, her great-grandmother started a women’s hospital in India. These stories stress pacifism and feminism as readers will learn that there are other ways people could be brave besides going to war. This beautifully illustrated book may inspire readers/listeners to inquire about their own heritage.
1. Which of the girl’s ancestors do you think was the bravest? Explain.
2. In chapter 8, the girls says that she will make history the way her
ancestors did.
What do you think she will do to make the world a better place?
3.The girl in Chapter 8 received things that were passed along from each of her
ancestors. What do you think was the best one? Explain your answer.
She received a white handkerchief, a quilt, painted plates, a brass
teapot, books, a harp, her father, and stories about her family.

YOUNG AUSTRALIAN BEST BOOK AWARD - WINNER - PICTURE BOOK
This is a cautionary tale of environmental destruction. Uno loves the forest with all the plants and strange inhabitants. As time passes, more people begin to move into the area. They cut down the trees to make room for their homes. The scales begin to tip and the balance of nature leans toward human activity. Eventually, just about all the plant and animal life disappears. Although the story ends on a happy note, readers/listeners learn the importance of environmental awareness. In addition to the message, the illustrations are simply dazzling. This is one beautiful book.
1.This story is mainly about balance. What does that mean?
2. Can you find examples of this story in your neighborhood?
3. What would happen if all the trees were cut down?
There would be no places for birds and squirrels to live.
There would be no source of oxygen left and all living things would die.

This picture book encourages listeners/readers to find something in common
with the four animals shown on each page. Some answers are easy;
some are more challenging. Great illustrations accompanied by descriptive vocabulary, make this a read aloud you will use each year.
1. Have the children work in groups and create their own class book using the
same pattern.
2. Divide your class into groups of three. Give each group four or five pictures
of animals along with a paper with the names of these animals. They need
to find as many common characteristics as they can and list them. After a
minute or two, each team passes the pictures and the list to a new team.
They must try to add to the list. Continue until all teams had the opportunity to
look at all the pictures.

Based on the historic sit-ins at Woolworth’s, the author dramatizes these events illustrating the difficulties four black students faced as they tried to order coffee and donuts in this segregated store. These peaceful protests led to the 1966 Supreme Court decision against racial discrimination. This story offers a good introduction to the Civil Rights Movement by depicting nonviolence as the method of defeating hate.
1.The students ordered doughnuts and coffee, with cream on the side. This is a
metaphor. What do you think it means?
Coffee is dark and cream is white. The students wanted whites and
blacks to sit at the counter together.
2. The author says, “If black people and white people could break bread
together, everyone would pass the test.” What do you think that means?
3. What do you think was the hardest thing the four students at the counter had to

CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW - COMMENDATION 👍🏿
This unusual book focuses on specific animal features. On one page you see five animal noses. Listeners are asked to decide the name of the animal each nose belongs to. On the next page, you see the five animals and a sentence describing how they use their noses. This is repeated with ears, feet, eyes, tails, and mouths. At the end of the book is a detailed description of all the animals shown earlier. Since I had difficulty naming most of the animals, I found it impossible to attach a grade level to it. It looks like a preschool-first grade book, but the content should interest anyone. In any event, it is a fun, informational book to share.
This entire book engages the mind of the reader.
